Performance within the Z Contemporary Art Meetings, in Montalbán de Córdoba, included in the program “For acts for an art piece”, along with Pedro Alba, Domix Garrido and José Iglesias. September, 2013.
This performance reflects on an everyday and intimate act: making the bed. This is something you normally do for yourself. Making other people’s bed can feel like an intrusion into the privacy of that person.
A ‘mucama’ is a maid or servant. Lately I have felt like a “mucama” for various reasons. With this performance I try to reconcile myself with this feeling. I make a bed and invite someone to lie in it.
She/he rests for a few minutes and then I invite her/him to leave. Without removing the sheets, I make the bed again with new sheets, and invite another person to lie down. I repeat this process several times until the bed is full of overlapping sheets. When I am out of sheets, I get in the bed between the weight of the sheets and the mattress and curl up. I move around until I fall out of the bed, wrapped in the sheets like an amorphous worm slowly moving along the ground.
Thanks to Laura Hernández Peñalver and Carmen Rivero for their photos.
Note: All invited people go to bed dressed. Only two remove their shoes.
